EU ETS2 - Emission allowance - Household costs calculator

Our calculator helps you calculate additional costs for your household imposed by the new Emission Trading System (ETS 2). While the existing EU Emissions Trading System (now also called ETS 1) already requires polluters to purchase carbon permits, the new system applies to fuel combustion in buildings, road transport, and small businesses not included under ETS 1. Although the cost is paid by the polluters, it indirectly increases fuel prices for households—raising the cost of gas heating and motor fuels.

The calculator calculates the price of allowance at 63.10 EUR from 09.06.2026. Other prices of allowances: 75 EUR, 100 EUR, 125 EUR, 150 EUR.

Carbon trading, also known as emissions trading schemes, is a regulatory tool designed to encourage the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and support the goal of achieving climate neutrality by 2050. The European Union first introduced this program in 2005. A new system is set to be implemented in 2027, with the initial price of CO₂ allowances capped at €45. This price will later be aligned with the ETS 1 allowance price.

Calculation

The calculation uses fuel emission factors to determine how carbon permit costs affect fuel prices. For example, with a carbon price of €45 per tonne of CO₂, the price of one liter of diesel increases by approximately €0.12.

Prices are shown in euros. To convert them to your local currency, please enter your exchange rate in the last field in the bottom section of our calculator.
