Volume unit "imperial"
British volumetric system for liquid and dry substances.
Originally, imperial units were commonly used in Great Britain, but since 1824, they were officially prohibited and replaced by the International System of Units (SI), which is widely used worldwide. This measure aimed to standardize measurement units and improve the accuracy and comprehensibility of measurements.
However, even after the adoption of the SI system, some imperial expressions remained in colloquial speech and people's customs. People were often more familiar with imperial units such as foot, pound, inch, stone, and others and had them firmly rooted in their everyday lives. Therefore, in 1995, a legislative change allowed for the official use of imperial units once again. Despite being permitted now, their use in the public sector and official documents is limited. Currently, imperial units are commonly used in everyday life, informal situations, and certain traditional sectors, like serving beer in pints or giving distances in miles.

Imperial units of volume questions and answers
Where are imperial units used?
Officially the imperial system is used by the USA, Myanmar and Liberia. However both Myanmar and Liberia are in on their way to switching to imperial. The UK officially uses the metric system, however people still use some units such as miles, pounds, gallon and pints, among others in every day life.
What were imperial units based on?
Originally the imperial system was based on the human body (e.g. inches were a thumb), but this does not work because obviously not every thumb is the same.
